  1. I am in zone 6- a good plant is Hydrangea a. petiolaris.  It will attach it's roots to the wall.  The 1st year you plant it it does very little.  Be patient and give it some fertilizer- the 2nd year it will begin to grow.  For color, also plant Moon Flowers and Morning glory vines.  They are annuals, but very pretty.  A Clematis or two would be nice (they are perennials) , but they need some support like a trellis.

  2. if you have at least 4-6 hours of sun on wall---a super easy mix would be morning glories in blues, purples, pinks, white AND a moonflower vine. That way you have sweet colorful morning glories blooms in the morning and intoxicating jasmine -meets- honeysucke -meets- gardenia in giant white trumpet shape flowers at night (moonflower) Both are soo very easy from seeds so for a few bucks you can have a crazy mix! They will die off in winter and reseed if you are in colder climate. Super fast growers.

  3. It would help to know what zone you live in and what sort of sun or shade the garden wall gets.

Generally, some good climbers are morning glories, ornamental honeysuckle, hyacinth bean vine, moon flower vines.  The honeysuckle is perennial too.

  4. If your aim is to hide something then choose a climber that is evergreen like clematis armandi

    or perhaps an Ivy.

  5. If it's a small back yard, I'd avoid either mile-a minute(russian) vine or verginia creeper as they are too vigerous - OK this year - but you'd regret it next!  Either add trellis/netting and go for a mixture of honeysuckles (include an orange one) and clematis (include montana for early spring and armanii - evergreen and fragrant) or use wall shrubs (possibly with ivy behind them).  Plant japanease quince, ceonothus, or fruit trees against the wall, and prune out any shoots that venture more than 30cm out from the wall.  tall shrubs such as bamboos , kerria japonica or phesant's berry could also be planted.  Fatsia japonica would fill a shady corner.

  6. You don't give any clues to aspect, soil condition, etc. If you want something really quick, try Russian Vine aka Mile-A-Minute, but do NOT plant it into the ground, use a big pot (40 ltrs at least) so that it is contained otherwise it will take over the whole garden. You'll also need to add some support for any climber to attach to.
