    A plant's metabolic processes are "triggered" by photosynthesis which uses the energy of the sun (or other light source) to make these processes go forward.  Generally speaking, plants cannot detect the difference between energy from the sun and energy from an artificial light source; though I suspect that the sun's energy is more efficient (just a guess about this).
