  1. Not enough light and not being able to get rooted.

  2. there are many reasons why plants don't thrive, basically type of water and amount of light and you should get a book about aquariums and plants and read up on the various needs

but most of the plants I see in pet shops now days ARE NOT

aquatic plants, they are normal houseplants that will survive under water for a short period of time, please get a book so you will know which plants to buy

  3. When I started my planted tank it was a little tough. I've found that if you get a light for you're hood the emits UV rays it helps a lot. Usually they'll say something like "day spectrum" Also look for a Co2 system. You can find them at most fish stores. They're usually made of clear plastic. Also try picking up some fertilizer pellets. But be careful with those because they can raise the ammonia in you're tank.

  4. maybe wrong gravel,

get gravel thats made for underwater plants,

then get underwater plant fertilizer, but make sure its okay with fish

  5. Deficiencies in light, CO2, or nutrients would take weeks to show their results.  New plants adjust to new parameters (lighting intensity and spectrum, pH, hardness, temperature, photoperiod, etc.) by melting, which is basically dropping their leaves.  The rotting leaves will then disperse and collect fungus if not removed.  The best thing you can do is remove dead leaves, siphon more frequently, and let the plants be.
