Question:

Plastic Drain Pipe?

My contractor used plastic drain pipe that he glued together different pieces and then glued to a existing steel drain pipe. I now need to disassemble in order to clear a clogged pipe with a snake since liquid chemicals are not working. Is cutting the plastic pipe the only way, or is there someway of disolving the glue. Otherwise I will have to try and piece the whole thing together again.

  1. do not cut the pipe where he cut the pipe find a whole piece cut than buy a rubber sleeve from loews or hd put the clamps on and good to go if you have to snake again just remove the rubber boot and snake

  2. Find out what size the pipe is and buy two couplings and some glue and hack saw a section of the pipe out to remove your clog.

When done unclogging, glue them back together using the couplings.

In most drains the plumber should have install a threaded clean out plug at the beginning of each run.

  3. I can solve this, find the size pipe he used and buy a PVC (plastic) clean-out plug, cut the pipe glue in place and in the future unscrew the plug insert the snake. I don't know where the clog is but most of the time the s trap under the sink is where the clog is, if so dip all water out and place bucket under drain take apart and check.

  4. Cut at a convenient place to be able to clear the drain and use the rubber coupling with clamps called a fernco coupling.  If you have to take it apart again all you'll need is a screwdriver or 5/16 nut driver.

  5. your not going to be able to break that glue-there should be a main access hole in order to run snake-other then that its cut the pipe and rejoin with connector and glue--if you have to check and see where you can put in access plug for future use

  6. Cut the pipe.  It's easy to glue it back together - use a couple.

  7. PVC isn't expensive and very easy to work with, however try first tying a plastic soda bottle filled with water and drop it down the hole until it stops. Measure your cord as you pull the bottle back up and you'll have a measurement of where the obstruction is.
