Plastic bottles?...x*x?

It seems we are finally reaching the point, in some states, where they are telling us how bad plastic bottles are for us..

( they tell us that the chemicals in the plastic leach into our water, etc.) and for some, it poses a problem about carrying around our water, in these bottles. Is there a solution for this? We can't carry water around in glass bottles, they could potentially be harmful to others) and aluminum isn't the anwer, that can be harmful, too...So, what ideas for containers for water, etc., should we be thinking of?

( mine would be water in containers like milk cartons)

  1. milk cartons would break rather easily, as they are built of paper. A good idea would be just to buy one strong bottle, plastic or not, and use it over and over. We would still use plastic but it would decrease the use of plastic greatly. And it isn't just about the plastic chemicals but about everything else too. Too make plastic, you need a lot of energy, and plastic also takes forever to decompose. A lot of times, small plastic bits are eaten by animals who choke and die. So, plastic is harming us alot, so try not to use/throw away plastic bottles, or take a lot of plastic bags at the supermarket.

  2. Milk cartons are paper on the outside lined with plastic on the inside.  How would that be any different from a plastic bottle?

  3. They're saying the same thing about baby bottles! So i think we should use a different type of plastic or use the bottles with the s***w on cap on top

  4. I think that people should use the same bottle over again if they are using plastic bottles.

  5. People have been concerned about pcb's in milk cartons for a while, so I don't think that is a solution.

One alternative is a filter that can be used where ever you are.  You don't carry the water at all, but rather carry the filter.  You can use whatever container is available at the water source, and filter the water before you drink it.  The water isn't in the container long enough for the harmful chemicals to leach into it.  Bottled water is tremendously expensive, so even though some filters sound expensive, in the long run, they could save a fortune.  Commercially available "pitcher filters" are available for home use, as well as reverse osmosis systems.

The filters could be life-saving in poor countries that have problems with access to clean water, making otherwise bad water drinkable, and keeping children from dying of dysentery.  Here in developed countries, it could save the energy used to transport clean water to areas where water is readily available.
