  1. not a great idea. it must have air circulation in it to breath. try just putting a small amount of water in it daily. it will get musty and damp.

or buy a plastic sheet and drill holes throughout it for air.

  2. ditch the cage and get the animal a proper tank. The animals will only get to the saran wrap though the wires and destroy it. Also hermit crabs shouldn't be exposed to any metals in their habitat. So why people sell them in cages too small for multiple crabs and made of wire is beyond me.

Please just invest in a proper hermit crab set up. That way the animal has at least a slight chance of living out his potential 20 + years with you.  The aquarium doesn't have to be water proof. So if you are willing to do some DIY you can get an old cracked 10 gallon for next to nothing. ( I got one for $10 and I got my 100 gallon for $40) Then you can make a lid from plexi glass if you don't have a proper lid and can't afford a glass lid.

In a 10 gallon you have room for a few hermit crabs. Their required salt and fresh water bowls. Plenty of climbing space, room for hiding spots and room for your temperature and humidity gages.

  3. Sure, just leave a little open for air.
