Question:

Plasticware and Styrofoam in schools?!?

Every day at my school hundreds of polystyrene foam (styrofoam) plates are thrown away along with sets of plasticware (a plastic spork with napkin and plastic packaging).

I feel guilty when I throw away/buy things made of plastic.

Now I bring my own lunch in reusable containers (not just for the trash issue--school lunch is terrible)

I realize there is a sanitation issue--disposable plates are a must, but why can't we use something made from paper?

I'd like to convert my school (and whole school system) to paper plates by Earth day.

Do they use polystyrene foam (Styrofoam) plates or plasticware at your school/work?

Is anyone else interested or concerned?

Has anyone tried to address this issue?

Give me your opinion.

Rant your heart out.

  1. Many things are waisted. the thing is they will sell and be thrown away until resources for this stuff is depleted. not a big deal. the other option is washing dishes by hand or in a machine and they also use up soap. so is the school saves money then that's not so bad.

interesting they do get paper from wood.. why not use banana leafs instead?

Anything made on earth is from earth and returns to earth.

Styrofoam and such i think( not sure) is made from oil byproducts.

-mmm i have noteded that when your around "waisted" thing then you feel bad but if your not then you dont care as much. you should work in a burger king or fast foods store and then you will see buckets of meat waisted its insain. you could boil it or cook it and it would be fine to eat but they just chuck it out.

well good luck on earth day!

  2. Simple dollars and cents...polystyrene and plastic are much cheaper than paper and today's school systems just don't have the money to spare to put into more expensive, ecologically sound products.
