Here is a interesting conundrum to which I know the answer, but there is ten points for the first correct reply.

Which Scottish railway station has five platforms which are numbered "0", "1", "2", "3" and "4" and WHY are they numbered that way?

Remember, first correct answer gets the ten points.

  1. What?

  2. Cardiff Central (in Wales) has a two-car length Platform 0 which was installed on the north side of the former locomotive track alongside Platform 1. This was after the bay platform (Platform 5) between platforms 3 and 4 at the western end of the station was closed and filled in. So the numbering from the north (Central Square) side of the station is 0,1,2,3,4,6,7. Platforms 8 and 9 were on the former Clarence Road branch. These were used for parcels traffic after the withdrawal of passenger service.

I should imagine that the Scottish station platform numbering was done for a similar reason, i.e., platform 0 was installed after the other 4 platforms and ScotRail did not want to reverse the numbering sequence to accommodate the new platform.
