The UEFA president was once a player who managed to win three FIFA Ballon d’Or awards during his career, but believes the Argentinean star is going to surpass him soon.
A lot has been said regarding this year’s Ballon d’Or winner and now the UEFA president, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michel-c25453 Platini, has stated that the Argentinean maestro, Lionel Messi, is the only player who can beat his record of winning the prestigious honour more than three times.
Many believe that it is going to be unfair to the Real Madrid star, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Cristiano-Ronaldo-c9629, who has achieved a lot more than Messi during the last season.
The Portuguese skipper was able to score the highest amount of goals for Real Madrid, and helped them win the Spanish La Liga in that very season.
Moreover, Ronaldo also took the Spanish giants to the semi-final stage of the UEFA Champions League.
Besides this, Ronaldo was also the captain of the Portuguese national team in the Euro 2012, and even though they did not have a world-class squad, they were still able to reach the semi-final stage of the competition, all thanks to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ronaldo-c31734’s brilliance
in front of goal.
However, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lionel-Messi-c22296 has also done a lot last season. The Argentinean skipper has managed to score more than 70 goals in a single season and he is currently competing for Gerd Muller’s goal-scoring record in a single calendar year.
The German international scored 85 goals in one year and Messi has already scored 84 in the year 2012 and is a favourite to beat Muller in order to set a new record.
Since Messi has done so much in the year 2012, Platini believes he is the only player who can win the prestigious honour four times.
“I’m sure he will surpass the record,” the Frenchman told journalists at UEFA headquarters in Nyon. “I don’t whether it will be this year or next, but he will get the fourth and overtake Cruyff, Van Basten and me.”
Lionel Messi recently picked up a knock on his left knee, but is expected to be back before the game against Real Betis on Sunday. If he is to score a goal in that match, he will equalize this year’s goal-scoring tally with the legendary German striker,
Gerd Muller.
