Plaxico Burress denied work release

Former New York Giants star Plaxico Burress was denied work release from prison yesterday and will likely remain behind bars until the middle of next year.

The state Department of Correctional Services said Burress’ application warranted rejection due to the nature of his crime. Burress was indicted by grand jury of two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, and a single count of reckless endangerment in the second degree. If the former Giants star doesn’t appeal the decision the next time he can apply for release again will be June 6, 2011 when he comes up for full release based on good behaviour.

"The serious and negative impact illegal guns have on the community coupled with [the] dangerous nature of the weapon discharging in a public place renders him unsuitable for work release," the agency said.

It was the second time Burress has been denied work release, hardly a surprise considering less than two percent of the nearly 27,000 applications received last year were granted according to New York prison system spokeswoman Linda Foglia.

Burress caught the winning touchdown in their Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots in 2008.
