Play avi file in dvd player?

ok so i have these file i want to play in my dvd player and they are .avi format. i put the dvd in and the movie plays, but it says the audio is not a supported format. how can i get around this problem so i can watch these on tv instead of on my laptop?

1.  output laptop to tv with vga or dvi.  2. get a dvd player that supports DivX (walmart).  download DivX (free) and then burn dvds with DivX.  Enjoy.

i have a philips dvd player with divx from walmart in my room for $50.  then in the living i have a Philips dvd and 5.1 surround combo for $250 from walmart and i comes with an ipod dock.
