I need some ideas of a play for a group of high schoolers (13-18). It needs to have a lot of cast members. Approximately 15 guys and 10 girls. It also needs to be from the late 19th century or early-to-mid 20th century.

Thanks in advance... I am all out of ideas.

  1. When I was 16 I was involved with a group that put on "West Side Story".  It was one of the highlights of my life.  It's a terrific play and is always pertinent to urban life for teenagers.

  2. Most of what I might suggest are Musicals, and appropriate, with some modifications perhaps, and all were/are popular.

The issue is being allowed by law to perform anything, that has been done.

    Sound Of music

    Guys and Dolls

    West Side Story

    Rent

    Grease

    Little Shop................

    Etc.

Then certainly there are more AGE appropriate shows, usually worked into summer off seasons, by many theaters, that might be suitable.

All are timely, topical, but again, might not legally be allowed.

Going back to the 19th century will be challenging, in costuming at the very least, and relating the context to any modern day audience.

For a school production, 25 is a HUGE cast, and what you choose, might allow that 20 of them are FILLERS or chorus, with at most, 5 Principals.

Obviously there are hundreds you could perform, even many, now in the public domain, but getting it all together in a cohesive time frame, might push you.

I want to assume there is an authority figure involved? Teacher, Theater mentor, someone? They would truly be the better source for directing the operation, with input from YOU, whoever you might be, in this involvement, and in doing research for a specific, you might also consider a budget, time frame, casting, simple or elaborate, Fun and entertaining, heavy and dramatic, Social or Political commentary, etc. etc. etc.

    Just my 2 "scents"

  3. I would do musical wise Bye Bye Birdie, its a great musical that involves a big casts. Also Little Shop Of Horrors is a good one. I did that at my high school, and we had a cast of 37 people. for each number we just had all the cast members come out and do great dance choreography. Also Les Misrables   high school edition is a great one too, its a hard musical to do, but when I did it, it was amazing.

Also does the show your looking for need to be set in the time date you listed, or did it have to be written in that time?

    beacuse other great shows are:

    Peter Pan

    Show Boat

    Sound Of Music

    d**n Yankees

A great website to get more info is

    http://www.mtishows.com/default_HOME.asp

this is where my high school got its shows and rights, our school had very expensive and professional shows.

We did in my 4 years

Mid Summer Nights Dream, Crucible, Beauty and the Beast, Aida, Little Shop, Les Mis, Noises Off, Our Town

Hope this helps, and best of luck. Check out that site!

  4. Oklahoma! awesome musical... ummm our town is pretty good too. if you are looking to write a play, then an idea could be something 1920's themed
