PlayStation 3 outsells the Xbox 360 and Nintendo 3DS for the previous week
Nintendo are still recoiling from the drastically poor sales of their handheld portable gaming device the Nintendo 3DS. To make matters worse, Sony’s PlayStation 3 console has seen a spike in sales after a price drop for the console.
The Japanese hardware sales charts for the previous week are in and they make for some interesting reading, as it seems that the price drop which was aimed at increasing sales for the 3DS may have increased the sales for the product, but a price drop for
the PlayStation 3 had a more significant impact on sales.
Taking over the top spot of the charts after almost doubling its sales from the previous week was the PlayStation 3 which sold 64,786 units as compared to the 33,831 units it sold in the previous week. The marketing gurus at Sony must be smiling from ear
to ear about now.
The 3DS saw a small drop in sales as it managed to move 49,076 units as compared to its previous week’s sales figures of 54,744, which makes one wonder whether the price drop will not be enough to save the slowly sinking portable gaming device.
However, it is still too soon to make that assumption, seeing how the holiday season is a few months away. That period though, will be crucial for both the 3DS and Nintendo.
Sailing steadily, but losing just fewer than 5000 units of sales, the PlayStation Portable sold 25,404 units in the last week. The sales figures before that stood at 30,199 units.
The Nintendo Wii may have a younger brother on the way, but that did not stop it from selling another 10,743 units. It was a very small drop in sales from the 11,606 units sold earlier.
Nintendo also has the, still fairly consistent, sales of the DS to thank, as the predecessor to the 3DS is still selling a few thousand units (4,890).
As out-of-date as the original iPod, there should be a statue erected of the PlayStation 2 console as it still managed to sell 1,386 units even after all this time. Who bought it and for what reason is something worthy of a reality TV show.
The Xbox 360 has never been popular in Japan, but it seems 1,219 Japanese people decided to buy the console, which we predict is mostly for the impending release of Gears of War 3.
So another week has gone by and Nintendo ought to be more concerned about the 3DS’ position on the charts, even after the massive price drop was announced. Sony should be satisfied with the huge leap in the sales of the PlayStation 3 and Microsoft, well
it is more of the same for them.
