Microsoft and Nintendo seem to be given a head start for their Xbox 720 and Nintendo Wii U consoles by Sony who may be the “last to announce something”.
It is around that time again when the three major console developers, Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo, are under the microscope from everyone who is a part of the video game industry, to see what they have in store for everyone in terms of the next generation of home consoles.
Most of what is circulating around on the internet is rumour and speculation, but from time to time an official from one of the companies comes out and makes a statement, which in turn fuels further rumour and speculation.
One such statement is that of Philippe Cardone who happens to be the CEO of PlayStation France. He explained why he thought that Sony would be the last of the three platform developers to make an announcement, seeing how the other two consoles were nearing the end of the life cycles.
He began, “It’s true that there are many rumours, but I couldn’t tell you anything.” Before going on to tell everyone something, “This Wii is pressed for time because it is in decline. In our case, we have a lot less pressure. We were the last to leave the PS2 (PlayStation 2), we will probably be the last to announce something.”
His statement does, at least chronologically speaking, make sense as Nintendo was the first to announce their current generation console, the Nintendo Wii, and were followed soon after by Microsoft who released their Xbox 360.
Sony released their PlayStation almost a year later, with the other two consoles having a major share of the market.
So although, Sony may look to take their time and be fashionably late with their console, there is a risk of them having to make up for lost ground when they finally do announce and/or release the PlayStation 4.
Having said that the CEO went on to explain that there was still plenty of life left in the PlayStation 3.
“I’ve always said a ten-year life cycle for PS3, and there is no reason to go away from that.”
