PlayStation Pass confirmed for all future PlayStation 3 first party games
Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation Pass is not just a fad or an experiment, but rather is a system which is set to be implemented with every first party PlayStation 3 title. The news comes after Sony’s arm in United States issued the following statement,
“Online Pass will be incorporated into Uncharted 3 and future Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS) games with online functionality.”
The statement concluded with, “We will provide further information in the future.”
The PlayStation Pass was first implemented with Insomniac Games’ conclusion to the Resistance trilogy, Resistance 3, and is set to continue with Naughty Dog’s eagerly anticipated Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.
For those readers who are unfamiliar with how the PlayStation Pass works, it is fairly simple. When a gamer purchases a game, it comes with a code, which, when prompted to do so, gamers must enter to access the online features of a game.
The code, however, is for one single use only and cannot be re-used by another user. This means that consumers who are looking to buy a Pre-Owned copy of the game will have to pay a little but extra if they want a code for themselves in order to access online
features.
The reason behind the move has been the fact that when consumers purchase a pre-owned copy of the game, none of the proceeds of the transactions reach the publisher or the developer who put in so much time and effort into making the game.
However, at the same time, gamers feel cheated at having to pay a higher price for an already fairly expensive game.
Sony are not the only publisher who have moved to implement a Pass system of their own as other major publishers such as Ubisoft, which is responsible for the Assassin’s Creed Series, all the Tom Clancy and Ghost Recon games among others, THQ, which is behind
titles such as Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine and the upcoming Saints Row The Third and Electronic Arts have already implemented the pass system on their titles.
Electronic Arts has been at the forefront of the Pass system, with titles such as ‘Medal of Honor’ making use of the system which is able to generate revenue from post-purchase sales.
Gamers who were hoping that the aforementioned pass systems would die away and things would go back to normal will be slightly disappointed, while enthusiasts who are first hand purchasers will not feel the change at all.
