Sony Executive claims that the ability of the Vita to link up with the PlayStation 3 will play a key role in the future of both consoles.
The long wait for Sony’s next generation of portable gaming consoles is finally over as the PlayStation Vita has finally been released in Europe and other territories including the United States.
Japanese gamers were the first to get their hands on the console as it was released in that particular region in December of last year. While many praised the console for living up to its promise of being a powerful piece of kit, the lack of content on launch day, barring a few titles, meant a steady decline in sales.
Sony did not seem too ‘concerned’ by the faltering sales figures but one could sense that they were focused on ensuring that the Vita got off to a strong start in the West and maintained a consistent flow of their console moving from retailers into households.
The Vita has now hit shelves in both the US and the UK and early sales look promising, though that suggestion is made on the turn out at the launch events of the console as no official sales figures have been released as yet.
The sales figures seem to meeting the consumer electronics giant’s forecasts as Fergal Gara, the Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment UK, who claimed that Sony was not planning on making the same mistakes Nintendo did with the launch of the 3DS.
He said, “Picking up on the Nintendo example, it’s not for us to comment on their performance, but I would say that the strength of our software has been demonstrated very well, and that was on our to-do list early last year: to launch with strong software and to make sure the supply of quality software was maintained though the year and beyond.”
Nintendo had a disastrous launch period with regards to the 3DS and only a major price cut helped the console reach the heights it has today. One major reason was the lack of content, especially games.
So with Sony claiming to have that area covered it seems the chances of a price cut at this point in time are very low.
However, Mr. Gara, did concede that the price could change over time and that depended on how consumers would respond to the product.
“It will take several years for this investment to pay back as it stands, so if we have to do more with the price...clearly, we’ll have to view how consumers respond – do they value the amount of technology packed into that box?”
So while a price cut is probable in the future it seems highly unlikely at this point in time.
