Sony have confirmed that Flickr will be accessible via the PlayStation Vita while apps for both Facebook and Skype are currently in development as well.
Aiming to be more than just a portable video game console, the Vita seems to be targeting an entire range of different market segments. The latest indication of this has been the fact that the Vita now has an application for running the popular picture sharing
website, Flickr.
Users can upload pictures onto Flickr and share them simultaneously on a number of social networking sites such as the more popular Facebook and Twitter. While Twitter has already been confirmed for the Vita there have been sound reports (read, “very very
strong rumours”) that a Facebook app is already under development.
We would feign surprise but the news is nothing unexpected. However, there are also reports that the online call service, Skype, is also getting itself ready to join the long list of apps already on their way to the PlayStation Vita.
The best part about all of this, for European and American users, is that Flickr and the other apps will be available in English from the get go, meaning that there should be no hesitation from consumers who would normally wait till the console has enough
meat on it.
The news could not come too soon as many consumers were concerned over the Vita’s poor sales figures in Japan, where the console has already been released for sale.
The Vita was unable to take the top spot in the hardware sales charts where the Nintendo 3DS continues to reign supreme and its figures have taken a nose dive since. Sony do not seem too concerned at the moment yet if the trend continues they may have to
take some action.
For the time being at least it seems that the consumer electronics giant is focusing more on getting things right for the consoles release in other territories and hoping that the Vita fares better there.
If that does not happen however, one can expect an unlikely early price cut to be on the cards, though Sony have a tradition of not doing that for quite some time following their products release.
