PlayStation Vita likened to PlayStation 3 by Resistance developer
In what has to be one of the most anticipated events in portable gaming history, it seems that the hype and news surrounding Sony’s next generation portable gaming device, the PlayStation Vita, is getting bigger and better.
The latest bit of hype was added by none other than Rob Heubner, who works at Nihilistic, the studio responsible for the first Resistance title to be released on the Vita. He likened the process of developing a game for the handheld device as very similar
to that of the development process as with its elder brother, the PlayStation 3. He stated that they are ‘a PlayStation 3 company’, meaning that they wanted to make it apparent that they have worked on PS3 titles.
He went on to explain, “We're a PlayStation 3 company. That's our engine, that's out technology. And really, [Sony] were looking for PS3 developers to milk the power out of the Vita, and I think that's definitely the right way to go because it's got a lot
of power.”
So, according to that statement at least, gamers can expect games which ought to be fairly similar to PlayStation 3 titles. Normally, this would be that part where we would join in with everyone else and laugh at the bold statement, but after seeing all
the demos for the games, especially Uncharted: Golden Abyss, which looks gorgeous, we would have to go with Rob Huebner’s word.
The developer did not stop there as he continued, “It's got all the shaders, it's got a lot of CPU, so it's really not that big of a change for us to work on the Vita compared to the PS3.”
So, the power and capability is there for developers to make next generation portable titles similar to current generation games, which is not a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination.
Again, taking Uncharted: Golden Abyss’s example, that boast is easily backed up. Huebner and Nihilistic are currently well into development on the PS Vita’s Resistance game. Titled Resistance: Burning Skies, the game is set to expand on the doom and gloom
Resistance universe.
However, there is mounting speculation as to whether or not Sony will go ahead and lower the price for the PlayStation Vita after its closest competitor, Nintendo, slashed the prices for its portable gaming device, the 3DS. However, the Vita is a more powerful
machine if one takes a look at the specifications and has more value for its buck.
Gamers can find out for themselves how the Vita fares against the 3DS when it is released and whether or not Sony will announce a price cut in the near future.
