Sony claims market response proves demand for portable gaming device, looks to build on momentum.
The amount of hype surrounding the PlayStation Vita reached astronomical levels when it was officially unveiled at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles last year. However, apart from a solid first week in Japan, the sales figures of the Vita
had been falling faster than one could have imagined.
Sony claimed to be unconcerned by those developments and focused on its Western launch of the Vita. One could sense the tension from Sony as they had a number of promotions for various territories in an effort to boost demand.
It seems that all those offers have made the difference as the console has sold an impressive 1.2-million units since its release on the 22nd of December in Japan.
Andrew House, the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, was pleased with the result and stated the sales figures have, “exceeded expectations...firmly establishing PS Vita as the must-have portable entertainment device across the world.”
He continued, “PS Vita was designed to deliver the ultimate portable entertainment experience, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the reaction we’re seeing from consumers and the pace at which PS Vita is selling.”
House went on to explain that the response from the market proved Sony right in their belief that there was demand for the Vita, “The market has responded and there is clear demand for a mobile device capable of providing a revolutionary combination of rich
gaming and social connectivity within a real world context.”
House also outlined how Sony were hoping to keep the momentum going and explained that they were in constant contact with third-party developers to bring well known franchises to the console. He also explained that the consumer electronics giant was focused
on ensuring a steady flow on content and games throughout the year so that Vita gamers would always have something to play.
It will be interesting to see if Sony can live up to that billing as the sales figures in Japan also started on a high before taking a nosedive in the ensuing weeks.
