Sony has more food for (a possible price cut) thought as the Vita recorded its lowest ever sales figure in Japan.
The PlayStation Vita is a great piece of technology, of that fact there is no doubt. Consumers and critics have unanimously praised it for what it is capable of doing in terms of being a handheld gaming device.
Yet at the same time, the same consumers and critics have also been less than impressed by the lack of content available for the console. After a promising launch period, where titles such as Unit 13, WipEout 2048 and Uncharted: Golden Abyss were launched,
Sony’s content line-up seems to have dried up.
LittleBigPlanet and Resistance: Burning Skies are scheduled for release soon, yet there is still time between now and their release date, which has resulted in a loss of interest in the PlayStation Vita.
The console is in desperate need of a marquee game such as a Call of Duty or Assassin’s Creed title, and while developers and publishers will cater to the needs of the portable market soon enough, there has been no solid indication of such a move which has
resulted in a feeling of reluctance when it comes to consumers wanting to purchase a Vita.
The Vita sunk to its all-time low, in terms of the sales figures it posted in Japan for the previous week, and is in desperate need of some fresh content to boost sales.
After selling 12,105 units in the week before last, the sales figures fell by nearly a quarter to 8,931 units in the previous week. This is the first time that the Vita’s sales have dropped to a four-figure number and is something that will surely have had
the executives at Sony sit up and take notice.
The consumer electronics giant has already forecast an annual loss of RBP 4-billion and also plans to focus on its gaming division to help increase revenues. The PlayStation Vita could prove to be a vital asset in that regard seeing how the PlayStation 4
is not set to make an appearance anytime soon.
