‘PlayStation Vita’ set to be confirmed as the new name for Sony’s Next Generation Portable (NGP)
Since its reveal at the Tokyo Game Show earlier this year Sony’s next generation handheld gaming device has been without an official name. Dubbed the Next Generation Portable or NGP at the time, the amount of speculation surrounding what the product’s final
name would be has reached absurd levels.
However, it seems that all that is set to end when Sony will officially announce the NGP’s official name in their press conference which takes place in the next few hours. However, the latest news that Sony has filed to register a trademark by the name of
PlayStation Vita or PS Vita seem to somewhat ruin the surprise.
The application also states that the trademark will cover everything from handheld game programs to dual analogue sticks, as well as touch screen capabilities. For anyone who still does not know what that means then, in simple terms, it means the NGP is
99.99% confirmed to be unveiled as the PS Vita.
Sony has a history of leaks when it comes to the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) and this year seems to be no different. Half the titles from Sony’s line up last year were already public knowledge with only the on-stage appearance of Sweet-tooth, the
demonic clown for the Twisted Metal series, gave fans something to gasp on.
However, it seems the NGP/PS Vita has taken the information leak, that Sony has become so well known for, a step further as a marketing picture for the NGP had PS Vita written for the world to see. It still did not out do the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play which
a factory worker allegedly stole and put a video on the internet of.
The latest events have made the previously rumoured title PSP 2 redundant and one can bet their house that the NGP is not going to be called anything but the PlayStation Vita. Though that does leave one wondering, what was wrong with the name PSP2?
