  1. Yes! The cream of tartar is only to preserve the playdough longer. You can, if you want, substitute with alum. Use any recipe you find and It'll be fine!

  2. I have made play-doh plenty of times when I was a preschool teacher.  The recipe that we used does have cream of tartar in it, though- that is what keeps it from getting too sticky and runny...Here is another recipe that I found, though- that doesn't have cream of tartar in it- but I haven't tried it myself...

    PLAY-DOH

    1 c. flour

    1/2 c. salt

    3 tbsp. oil

1 pkg of Koolaid (for colour and scent)

    1/2 c. water

**Keep the playdough in the fridge and if it gets too sticky, after a while you just add a bit of flour to it. Keep it in an air-tight container.

Here is another one, but again- I haven't tried it:

    PLAY-DOH

    Ingredients

    3 cups flour

    1 1/2 cups salt

    3 tablespoons oil

    1 cup water

    1 tablespoon food coloring

    **Directions

Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl. Add food coloring until you reach the desired color. Store in an airtight container.

Hope one of those works for you!

  3. We make a dough of equal quantities of salt and plain flour mixed with water and then we can bake the children's creations and they can paint them!

  4. Kids love to make this salt dough Play Doh (it's sanctioned mess making) and then to play with it after. With salt and flour as the key ingredients plus a few other household items you'll soon be rolling in dough.

    What you'll need:

    1 Large bowl

    1 Cookie sheet

    1 Rolling pin

    1 cup Salt

    1 1/4 cups Warm water

    1 Mixing spoon or mixer

    3 cups Flour

    1 plastic bag

    1 refrigerator

    painting supplies

    How to make it:

    DAY ONE

Pour 1 cup salt into large bowl.

Add 1 1/4 cups warm water, mix well.

Add 3 cups flour, mix well some more.

Knead into ball, seal in plastic bag and refrigerate.

    DAY TWO

    Take out.

    Mold into anything you want!

    Set aside.

DAY THREE (if not hard yet, put in oven for awhile)

Paint, if you wish. You may wish to put on cardboard first.

    Set aside.

    DAY FOUR

    TADA! A MASTERPIECE!

    Notes:

This craft takes 4 days to properly set once you've modeled and painted an object.

As in all recipes, results can vary depending on humidity, conditions, etc. Please try any recipe out before attempting in a group setting.

  5. I have two recipes:

    Ingredients

    1 cup plain flour

    1/4 cup salt

    1 tbspn cooking oil

A few drops of food colouring

    1/2 cup water

    Directions

    • Mix the flour and salt together. Add the oil.

    • Add the food colouring to the water, then add the coloured liquid, a little at a time to the flour mixture.

    • Knead until the mixture is smooth and has the consistency of scone dough.

    • Multiply the quantity by the number of children using the dough. Children can mix this themselves.

    OR:

    You need:

    2 cups flour

2 tbs oil 1 – 11/2 cups of hot water

    1 1/2 cups salt.

    Method:

Mix flour and salt. Mix water, oil and vegetable colouring. Gradually add water mixture to flour and salt using electric beater. When all dry ingredients are moistened, knead until smooth consistency. Store in air tight container.

    Hope this helps!
