Player Profile: Ezequiel Schelotto
Born on 23rd May 1989, the Italian winger of Argentine descent came on loan from Atlanta to Cesena this season and has been a good bargain for the Italian side. The 6 foot winger is gifted with great physique that helps him
dominate his opponents and the player has all the right basics to become a top midfielder. The right footed winger, although very discreet with his left foot, makes up for this deficiency owing to his great pace and acceleration that can make it hard for a
defender to chase him. The hard working youngster is a traditional box to box midfielder and is always willing to track back and help his defence when needed.
Schelotto is a very skillful player and his strength further helps him to run down the right flank and then produce an accurate cross. The youngster has the ability to cut back in the midfield and then revert to an out and out winger, something, that
can be very confusing for his marker. He has been likened to another Argentinean who played for Italy, Mauro Camoranesi. Former Italy coach Marcello Lippi once touted the youngster as the best young right flank winger in Italy and also said that the youngster
can be a valuable asset for any team in the world.
Schelotto’s pace is better suited as a winger when Coach Massimo Ficcadenti deploys a 4-2-3-1 formation in which his skill on the ball is more important. His ability to carve the defence open through his piercing runs makes him a very valuable player
for his team. But sometimes, the youngster relies a bit too much on his pace although, that is his strongest asset, he will have to eventually learn to conserve it and use it only when extremely necessary. On countless occasions, Schelotto has been guilty
of holding the ball and taking too much time releasing it, at times, losing it to the opponent in the process as well. But all these mistakes will minimize as he gains more and more experience.
Schelotto’s determination and grit has helped him gain a regular place at Cesena. He has a clear idea about how he should approach his game. The youngster can always be seen giving the team his best and is not one to back down even if the odds are
heavily weighed against his side. The youngster is energetic and has never had any on field or off-field problems during his time at Cesena which goes on to reflect on his performances and fair play. Cesena manager Massimo Ficcadenti reckons that the youngster
will eventually go on to play for the bigger outfits in Italy or maybe Europe but the for now is keeping his feet on the ground and has already made it clear that he will be loyal to Cesena at least until the end of his loan duration.
Cesena signed Ezequiel Schelotto in July 2008 but the Italian Under 21 international now is the property of Atlanta who bought 50% of the player’s rights in 2009 and then in 2010. The youngster has already started to attract interest from the top clubs
in Italian Serie A like Inter Milan, Juventus and Fiorentina which means that he might cost a bit more than what he is worth currently. Atlanta currently values him at €5-6 million and might shift the price up if big clubs like Juventus or Inter Milan come
knocking on their door.
