Football Player Profile - Luis Alberto Suarez Díaz
Born on 24th January 1987 in Salto, Luis Suarez is an impressive and complete forward. Born in Uruguay, who won the first ever World Cup, Suarez promises to be one of the most lethal attacking forces in the FIFA World Cup 2010. He has already scored thrice in his four appearances for his team, most importantly against South Korea. He scored two goals for his team, and almost single handedly took his side to the quarter finals of the World Cup. His second strike was truly remarkable, when he curled the ball into the net, giving the South Korean keeper absolutely no chance.
Suarez currently plays for Ajax, where he is now the club’s captain. He used to play as a shadow striker, behind Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, but after Huntelaar’s departure to Milan, Suarez now plays as the centre forward. He started his career in Nacional, and, in 2006, he became a national champion of Uruguay, scoring 12 times in 29 appearances.
After Nacional, Groningen purchased him for approximately € 800,000. He was successful here as well, scoring 10 goals in 29 appearances. This ignited interests from various clubs, with Ajax signing the starlet for 7.5 million Euros. At Ajax, he got on the scoring sheets numerous amounts of times, but was criticised for taking too many yellow cards. In the 2008-2009 season, he scored 28 times in 48 appearances in all competitions. Suarez’s best season was the latest season, where he bagged 49 goals in just 48 appearances. This shows the quality and talent this man possesses and has interests from the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United. He has voiced is opinion of joining either Manchester United or Barcelona, with Barcelona his favourites. A reported 35 Million Euros is demanded by Ajax for the 23 year old, and it is only a matter of time before one of these huge clubs will want his signature.
For his international side, Suarez has also impressed. In a total of 34 appearances for his country, he has scored 14 goals, and is one of the strong contenders to win the Golden Boot in the 2010 FIFA WORLD CUP. He scored against Mexico and helped his team to top Group A, where they faced tough opponents in France, Mexico and hosts South Africa. Uruguay went undefeated and did not concede a single goal. They topped the group and faced South Korea. Suarez scored both the goals for his team, and took a number of shots, only to be denied by the keeper. His second goal would be a leading candidate for the goal of the tournament, and is just one behind Higuain on goal tally. His team is all set to meet Ghana, and he will want to add more goals.
The Uruguayan goal machine is also famous for creating opportunities for his team mates. He is unselfish and sometimes too much. Being in front of a goal, he would sometimes pass the ball to his team mates to have a shot, although having the ability to score for himself. When he was included in the starting 11 for Uruguay’s qualifying campaign, he raised some eye brows. He, however answered all questions when he scored in the opening game against Bolivia, and then again against Chile.
He possesses some qualities which makes him a complete centre forward. He is a world class finisher, along with having remarkable technical abilities. He has a strong built, which makes him almost unstoppable. He also has that artistic touch that almost all South Americans have, which makes him think out of the box. He is creative, and has scored from a variety of angles. He also has great aerial ability, owing to his jump, making him lethal in the air. He has a powerful shot, almost unstoppable if given the time and space on the ball. His strike against South Korea was a perfect example of scoring from any angle and when given a free strike, he uses his strong right foot to unleash a deadly strike. All this is combined with the fact that he is eager to learn from his mistakes, is unselfish and is a hard worker on the pitch. Suarez promises to be a huge name in Europe, provided he signs to the right club. With the majority of players of the Golden Generation of Europe close to retiring, it is up to the likes of Suarez and others to make a name for themselves, and shine like their predecessors.
