Player Profile – Part 2: Arjen Robben
Robben was signed by Bayern Munich so that their attack could gain some “penetration” skills, according to the director Christian Nerlinger. Robben did exactly what he was supposed to do for the club and the Dutch left footed sensation was able to help his team get past the toughest of defenses, the kind that his team mates would struggle against before his arrival. Not only was he able to dribble past his market, he was also able to blast in long ranged goals to help his team win games.
The left footed Dutch player has scored a lot of goals during his career but his amazing 30 yard blaster against Fiorentina during the round of 16 in the Champions League and his “out-of-the-world” volley against Manchester United in the quarter final of the same tournament was simply phenomenal. Throughout the Champions Leauge, the right winger scored vital goals for his club. These two goals helped them advance to the semi finals, and then later during the semi final match he scored the goal against Lyon because of which, his team was able to reach the final round of the Champions League.
Robben was quite busy scoring goals for his club as they represented themselves in Europe; it was the wing wizard who scored a free-kick and a penalty in only seven minutes to help his team make a come-back against Freiburg. Exactly 11 days later, during the 112th minute of the DFP Pokal semi final match, Robben was able to get past three defenders and with an 80 yard sprint and amazing dribbling techniques, the Bayern Munich player ran in the 18 yard box and netted himself an amazing goal and did exactly what the German team wanted from him. Whenever Bayern Munich needed a man to save the day for them, Arjen Robben was there to serve them with goals or at least a move that would lead to a goal.
As Robben had become a very important player for the German club, Bayern Munich; he kept reminding the team why he had such a reputation. During his last campaign with his club, he was able to score 2 goals and was also able to give an assist as his team won the last match to confirm their 22nd domestic League title while they won the DFB Pokal Final 4-0. While they were crowned as Champions in Germany, Bayern Munich were to face strong contenders in the final match of the UEFA Champions League. As Jose “the special one” Mourinho was given charge of the Italian team Inter Milan, it was really hard for the German Champions to defeat them in the final match.
The final match of the UEFA Champions League was between Inter Milan and the German Champions Bayern Munich as the right winger Arjen Robben featured in the match that was supposed to take place in Santiago Barnabeu. Inter Milan had defeated the Spanish Champions Barcelona in the semi finals while Bayern Munich had defeated Lyon in the semi finals. With Jose Mourinho as the manager of Inter Milan, it was very hard for the German club to win the match as it was all Diego Milito. The match was won by Inter Milan after Milito scored 2 vital goals for the Italian club and the Azzuris were crowned Champions on Spanish ground.
Even though Arjen Robben couldn’t do enough to help his team win the Champions League he still managed to win the Bundesliga Player of the year award. He was most definitely the best winger and the best player of the German League and he totally outclassed each and every player, even his own team mate Frank Ribbery, who was also selected as a nominee for the same award.
