Player Ratings: West Ham v Manchester United – Part 1
West Ham shocked holders Manchester United 4-0 in their Carling cup quarter-final last night. Manchester United played a weakened team, but still retained players like Ryan Giggs, Darren Fletcher and Xavier Hernandez. Bettor.com gives you the player ratings
from last night’s match.
WEST HAM UNITED
Robert Green: 7.5
Green made a really good start to the game with a wonderful early save from Gabriel Obertan. He then mis-hit a goal kick, which cannoned straight into Federico Macheda, however luckily no damage was done. He looked sharp throughout the rest of the game and
made another fine block, again from Obertan in the second half.
Julian Faubert: 6.5
The former Real Madrid player had a great game on the right side of the pitch. He was solid throughout and hardly gave either Obertan or Ryan Giggs a sniff for the entire 90 minutes.
James Tomkins: 7.5
Easily the pick of the centre-halfs on the pitch. Tomkins looked assured all night and came out stronger in all aerial duels. The young Englishman looked impressive throughout, and was substituted half way through the second half.
Mathew Upson: 6.5
Upson worked hard as usual, and complemented the impressive Tomkins reasonably well. He made a crucial clearance to deny Manchester United an early lead and kept Hernandez quite for most parts of the game.
Tal Ben Haim: 6.0
The centre-back was yet again drafted into the left-back slot in his fourth consecutive start in the Carling cup. The former Chelsea man had a comfortable evening and nullified the threat from Bebe and Obertan.
Pablo Barrera: 5.5
The tricky winger was destined for big things early in his career, and he showed glimpses of magic, but failed to stamp his authority on the game. He was in and out of the match and was sloppy in possession on a number of occasions.
Radoslav Kovac: 7.0
Kovac was full of energy and worked hard throughout, and though he was sloppy in possession at times, he did his job brilliantly. He can be satisfied with his nights work.
Jonathon Spector: 8.0
Playing in an unusual position, the former Manchester United trainee had one of the best games of his career. He made only his third start of the season, and had previously played in both the full-back positions. He scored two brilliantly taken goals and
ran the show from the middle of the park alongside Kovac. He has given Avram grant some food for thought after his display in midfield against Fletcher and Anderson.
Luis Boa Morte: 6.5
He hasn’t got the legs of the old Boa Morte, but he has the experience, which he used to help Kovac and Spector dominate the midfield. He worked hard for his team and used the ball well.
Carlton Cole: 8.0
The big centre forward had his best game of the season. As the transfer window approaches he seems to be getting back to his best. Is that a motivation? Only time will tell. He was impressive against Smalling and Evans. He held the ball up well and brought
his team-mates into play, and scored two goals to cap off a wonderful evening.
Victor Obinna: 9.0
By far the most outstanding player on the pitch last night, Obinna was the architect of the win, and his performance will leave a lasting impression on the Hammers fans. His pace, trickery and movement was that of a world-class player and he couldn’t have
done any better than notching up four assists as well. He made the decision easy for the man of the match award.
SUBSTITUTIONS
Winston Reid: 6.0
Reid did the job with reasonable comfort when he replaced Tomkins for the last quarter of the match.
Zayon Hines: 6.5
He made his comeback after a long injury lay-off, and looked lively on the right hand side of the midfield.
Junior Stanislas: N/A
He came on for the last five minutes to replace the impressive Carlton Cole.
