Players Arsenal could potentially sign this summer
With the Premier League season drawing closer by the second, the team that is really in need of some reinforcements is Arsenal. Arsenal are currently lacking a number of players in key areas on the pitch. The most notable of those areas being in the goal and their defence. Arsene Wenger is reported to have bid for a number of players but he is currently staying quiet on the names of those players. Here is a look at players that could potentially be on their way to Arsenal before the start of the new season.
A name that has been constantly linked with Arsenal ever since the start of the transfer window is that of Fulham keeper, Mark Schwarzer. Almunia who is currently Arsenal’s first choice keeper has shown that he can pull off some fantastic saves every now and then but his inconsistency is what made Arsenal fail from reaching their true potential last season. Schwarzer on the other hand has been fantastic throughout his career for Fulham. He is arguably one of the most consistent keepers on the planet at the moment. It was his fine efforts that saw Fulham reach the finals of the first ever Europa League contest. Schwarzer had also on numerous occasions expressed his desire to join Arsenal, but with Roy Hodgson the former manager of Fulham heading to Liverpool, the deal has stalled. It is currently very unclear as to what is going to happen but Schwarzer is a player Arsenal feel they must have.
Maarten Stekelenburg is another goal keeper who Arsenal have had their eyes on. He has been tremendous for Ajax all season long and had a fantastic World Cup outing with the Dutch team. He managed to fill in the boots of Van Der Sar and made all the fans think, why wasn’t he in the squad much earlier. Ajax is currently facing a financial crunch and are looking to make some money off their players to pay for their debt. This is the perfect opportunity for Arsene Wenger to swoop in for the player, because if he waits any longer he would more than likely be beaten by someone else. Stekelenburg is a keeper who is currently in high demand but seems the perfect player to join Arsenal.
One of the big name centre backs that Wenger is looking to attract to the Emirates is German World Cup hero, Per Mertesacker. Mertesacker has had a tremendous run in at the World Cup, he was like the German Wall at the back making it almost impossible for almost every opposition to penetrate the German defence. He is currently twenty five years old and is six feet six inches tall, he could make up for the lack of height in the Arsenal back line and his experience in Europe could prove very beneficial for the young Arsenal squad. The only down side to Mertesacker’s game is that he might be a little slow for the English Premierships’ standards, however what he lacks in speed he makes up for in technique and mental awareness on the pitch.
The other defender on Wenger’s watch list is Everton’s Phil Jagielka. Jagielka has been tremendous for Everton ever since he joined the club. He is solid in defence and puts in more than a decent tackle for the ball. He is however a crucial part of the Everton squad according to David Moyes. The Everton manager has made it very clear as to how valuable the player is to the team. He has also hinted to Arsenal that if they wish to sign the player they will have to pay top dollar for the palyer.
