Players Jose Mourinho wants to sign for Read Madrid transfer rumours

Spanish giants Real Madrid are working hard to regain the La Liga title from FC Barcelona, who have won the last two years in a row. Last season they splurged on top-calibre players, and now they have brought in one of the sport’s most renowned managers, Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho has previously managed FC Porto in Portugal, Chelsea FC in England, and Internazionale Milano in Italy. His cumulative resume includes six domestic league titles, three domestic cups, three domestic super cups, two league cups, 1 UEFA Cup, and 2 Champions League titles. Needless to say, Mourinho is the man to hire in the pursuit of silverware.

Given Mourinho’s habit of signing players based on fitting a system rather than reputation and Real Madrid’s government-sponsored, limitless budget, it is certain that he will make some very interesting acquisition moves in an attempt to catapult Real Madrid atop the standings table once more.

His willingness to spend has already been shown by the £20 million signing of young winger Angel Di Maria from Portuguese club Benfica. Here is a preview of potential other potential signings Mourinho may attempt:

Maicon: Maicon is currently considered one of the top right-backs in the world. The Brazilian national is a solid defender and also extremely capable in attack. Arch-rivals Barcelona also have a Brazilian right-back in Dani Alves, and Real Madrid would love to trump them by signing the only defender on the Brazilian national team who is rated higher.

Rumours regarding Maicon’s departure from Italy have been prevalent for a long time and it is unlikely he will remain in Milan in general. He has previously stated that he would like to play in Madrid. He also has great history with Jose Mourinho as he was part of the Inter Milan squad Mourinho coached to a UEFA Champions League title.

Jean Makoun: Makoun has been a solid midfielder for French club Lyon and has been consistent for Cameroon as well. While a lot of major clubs are interested in him, he is the type of player who would mesh well with Mourinho’s system.

Mourinho loves defensive midfielders to shield his defenders and it seems that Real Madrid’s top DM Mahamadou Diarra will be departing Madrid for Manchester United.

Aleksandar Kolarov: Kolarov has grown to be considered one of the best left-backs in the world and is too big of a fish for the small pond that is Italian club Lazio. Manchester City are also interested in Kolarov, so it seems the Serbian player is due for a large payday.

Madrid is relatively weak in left-back, and their current LBs are either better suited for offense (like Marcelo) or playing on the right (Alvaro Arbeloa), so Kolarov would help them diversify their strengths.

Steven Gerrard: The most exciting signing for Mourinho would be snatching Steven Gerrard from crisis-ridden Liverpool FC. Gerrard is very committed to Liverpool, but it seems that the team’s failures might have finally gotten to him. He would not want to play against them in England, so if he moves, a spot in Madrid would be most logical.

Mourinho has also vocally expressed his appreciation of Gerrard’s game on numerous occasions. Read Madrid will give the ageing player a chance to actually win a league title and the transfer fee of at least £30 million would be hard to turn down for cash-strapped Liverpool.

Regardless of whom Mourinho signs, his brilliant managing should worry all other La Liga competitors. As of 9 May 2010 Mourinho-coached sides had a record of being unbeaten 136 times in a row. Mourinho has succeeded in tough leagues before and it’s unlikely that he will leave Real Madrid without adding to his career achievements.
