Players Who Should Build On Their Performances After The World Cup
The nineteenth edition of the World Cup was full of surprises, with many World Class players failing to perform, whereas players who no one had heard of before, stole the show. Here is a look at some of the players who can build on their spectacular performances at the World Cup.
Diego Forlan was the best player at the tournament, the Golden Ball that he’s taking home just proves that fact. The striker displayed pure class, Athletico Madrid will be hoping he carries that same form into the league next season so that they can build on the Europa League title that they won last season.
Kevin Prince-Boateng is currently employed at Portsmouth. Portsmouth were relegated last season and are being forced to sell their star player, hence a move out for Boateng is inevitable. Boateng had a fantastic run at the World Cup, he was a crucial part of the Ghanaian squad. Portsmouth will be looking to yield a maximum profit on the transfer of their prized asset, whereas Boateng will be looking to build on the reputation that he developed during the World Cup.
Maarten Stekelenburg went into the tournament as Edwin van der Sar’s replacement. He had some pretty big shoes to fill, most people thought that he would be the weakest link in the Dutch squad heading into the World Cup. The twenty seven year old however had a fantastic tournament, he marshaled the defense made key saves and proved that he was one of the strongest pieces in the Dutch team. He is currently employed at Ajax, but it won’t be long till one of Europe’s elite teams look to move in to sign the player.
Fabio Coentrao was the only half decent player in an otherwise poor Portuguese side. Bayern Munich are said to have given up their pursuit of signing the side back, but Chelsea might just make a move for him if Ashley Cole decides to join Real Madrid. The wing back has managed to make it into several best eleven team publications all over the globe. He will be looking to do justice to the reputation he developed at the World Cup.
Luis Suarez will be remembered by most as a cheat at the World Cup, but he did what any other professional would have done in that situation. Suarez partnered Forlan upfront at this year’s tournament and did a wonderful job. He managed to score three goals and one of those goals was a match winner. He was rumored to have been good but at the tournament he proved he was just as good as everyone said.
Thomas Muller, Golden Boot winner and Young Player of the tournament, he also manages to make it into almost every list of about the tournament and it only because he was nothing short of sublime. He had one of the best World Cup’s a player could ask for and has managed to make the world take note of his abilities. He will be looking to build on this in the coming season and will be hoping he gets more playing time at Bayern Munich.
