Christina McHale
19-year-old tennis prodigy, Christina McHale, has been one of the fastest rising youngsters from the United States. With the likes of Serena Williams and Venus Williams fading from the world tennis scenario, women’s tennis in American needs a super talent from the upcoming players to carry on the legacy of the sport in the region. McHale seems to be a perfect find for the American tennis and a lot is expected from this right-handed youngster.
Currently holding the 32nd spot in the WTA Premier Rankings, McHale has been phenomenal with her game play during the past year. She took off the 2011 season as the 115th ranked player but her voyage since then has been a tale of continuous improvement and dedicated hard work. She is having a 137-93 winning record till date but this doesn’t really depict the true talent this 19-year-old possesses. The American youngster is still to bag her first WTA championship title and strongly desires to end her drought in the 2012 season.
McHale took off her 2011 season from Brisbane but she kept losing in the opening round matches of most of the tournaments to follow. The American had her first decent run of the season when she made it to the third round at the Indian Wells Premier-level tournament, ultimately losing to Nadia Petrova in a three setter. She made it to the quarter-final of an ITF (International Tennis Federation) clay-court tournament in Pelham but was dumped by Caroline Garcia of France after a stiff battle. However, McHale kept crawling up the rankings with some eye startling victories.
Her success in the ITF events continued and she featured a quarter-final in Charleston before winning a championship title at Rome-Tiro a Volo. Her voyages at the elite WTA World Tour were not that much fruitful until she got into the best of her form. She made eye catching runs in successive tournaments at Carlsbad, Cincinnati and a third round appearance at the US Open Grand Slam to catch some attention of the tennis lovers.
She was defeated in the third round of this year’s Australian Open but won the two singles rubbers to assist her side to victory against Team Belarus in the Fed Cup ties. She had another sublime run in Doha, beating all the odds to reach the quarter-final of the hard court event but was outgun by Agnieszka Radwanska with double breadstick.
McHale has a long way to go and with the unmatchable talent she posses, the future seems to be very bright for the youngster. She has a lot of room for improvement in her game and she will learn the tricks of the trade with playing more tennis. She is deemed to be the future of American tennis and it is hoped that she turns into a more established player in the near future to take on the legacy of the sport in her hands.
