Players aiming for their maiden championship titles this year - Part One: Donald Young – Tennis Special
Just being a tennis player is not what the youngsters desire these days. It’s the charm and splendour of being known world over as top class tennis professional. Obviously the lime light and fan followership which the top-ranked
tennis players enjoy can’t be compared to anything but it is not just any other easy path to achieve such heights in today’s competitive world of tennis.
While all the sports media spin around the top-ranked tennis stars, let’s not forget the other talented contestants who are labouring hard to get their place among the top guns. A number of upcoming talents and veterans are having
very decent runs of form these days but a few are yet to claim their maiden championship title. Everyone knows the voyage to glory starts as soon as a player wins his first championship title, well, that’s easier said than done.
Let us have a look at some of the most talented tennis players who are straining hard to get their hands on their maiden championship trophy. These players have been performing decently well in recent past, yet not making any huge
impact on the tennis courts.
With Andy Roddick inching closer to his retirement and the current American number one, Mardy Fish, reaching 30 years of age, the American tennis desperately needs a hero to sustain the legacy of the sport. 22-year-old prodigy,
Donald Young, is deemed to be saviour of tennis legacy in the United States by a number of critics and fans.
Currently rated at number 38 in the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Rankings, Young has been one of the fastest rising tennis players for the last couple of years. The 6ft tall right-hander possesses immense talent
and his tennis skills are admired by a number of critics. However, Young is still to come out as a champion in any of the ATP World Tour tournament and is therefore, underrated most of the time.
Young took off his 2011 ATP season as a 127th ranked contestant but his tremendous run of form took him to the 39th spot by the end of the year. He had some memorable runs in several events but his lack of
experience couldn’t allow him to get his hands to a championship title. Many believe that the American youngster is still unable to handle pressure in big matches but will learn to do away with anxiety while playing with the passage of time. Well, he has almost
played 100 matches on the ATP World Tour and he better get use to perform well in pressure situations to have some sort of impact on his career.
Young had decent runs in the World Tour-level matches last season but kept winning at the ATP Challenger Tour to continue climbing up the rankings. The only final he played in his career so far was at the indoor hard-court tournament
in Bangkok. He stunned the then world number nine, Gael Monfils in the semi-finals but was completely blown away by the current world number four, Andy Murray, 6-2, 6-0, in the final of that ATP World Tour 250 event.
The American prodigy possesses all the traits to conquer a championship title; all he needs to do is to bring maturity in his game. Develop the nerves of steel and a habit of absorbing pressure on elite platforms. It is anticipated
that young will claim his maiden title this season and no doubt the 22-year-old can stun any top class player on his day.
