Players and GMs preparing for upcoming Trade Deadline -NHL Update
It is that time of the year again as players and general managers around the National Hockey League (NHL) get to have a little fun by trading and making offers as teams prepare for the upcoming trade deadline, which is on the 27th of February,
2012.
Something different this time around is that many teams around the league want to grab some big name players, but their respective clubs are not showing any potential signs of wanting to actually take part in some business.
"Right now there are different teams trying to make a trade, but the problem is there are only two or three teams that are even willing to make a trade for a draft choice or prospect, meaning they don't think they are going to make the playoffs," Nashville
Predators’ general manager, David Poile, told NHL.com. "What I want now versus what I can later are two different things because of the parity you have in the NHL."
For many GMs, waiting until the final few days before the actual deadline is enforced is the only way to approach the situation for getting the best trades, but for others, working far before that is how they are getting things done.
Observing Calgary Flames’ general manager, Jay Feaster’s remarks about the issue, it is not hard to see how he has been focused on making things happen well in advance, especially in the Mike Cammalleri and Rene Bourque deal with Montreal Canadiens.
Another aspect is that players, who are traded, need time to adjust with the team, which can be seen in Cammalleri’s case as he has only one goal in five games with his new club. A point which certainly backs Feaster views on getting things done well before
time.
At the moment, it is still not clear which team is looking to get the most out of the situation while some were hinting that the Boston Bruins were even considering trading their veteran Stanley Cup winning goalie, Tim Thomas, a rumour which they have clearly
denied.
Teams with huge salary cap space might be the biggest buyers this time, but that depends on what they will be acquiring in return.
