Players have 2 weeks to qualify for WGC-Accenture Match Play
Players have only two weeks to qualify for the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship. However, first they will have to make sure they rank in the top 60 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR).
The Championship will typically kick off the first World Golf Championships for the 2012 season. The final date by which players can qualify is February 13.
Players, who make it to the top 64, will be given a chance to play the event slated to take place from February 20-26, at Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain.
The Championship pits leading players against each other and this year is also expected to see a tough battle.
There are plenty of prominent players who are trying to solidify their positions to reach the top 60 this year.
Vijay Singh, who currently ranks 69th, is struggling to bolster his position, and is expected to gain considerable points. Singh is going to participate in the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Phoenix Open is slated to be held from February 2-5, 2012, and will expectedly see a stronger field than last year.
Dutch player Joost Luiten appears to be facing a tough situation, as he stands at the 64th spot in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Although he can qualify for the Championship, the situation may go against him if other players boost their rankings, pushing him further down the list.
Sean O'Hair, who is also playing the Waste Management Open, will look to strengthen his standing.
He currently ranks 68th and is likely to see tough resistance from other players trying to reach the top 60.
Moreover, Ernie Els from South Africa, who is no stranger to the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, finds himself in a comfortable position.
He currently stands at 59th but may see a tough time from rivals. Els has appeared in the Championship 11 times so far.
Executive Director, Gerald Goodman said, "It's really getting down to crunch time for players outside of the top 64 in the Official World Golf Ranking to make their move and play well to qualify for the Accenture Match Play Championship”.
He went on, "Players on the outside looking in aren't the only ones looking for good results as those safely inside the top 64 can improve their seeding with high finishes. The next two weeks will be exciting to watch".
