The Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to scrap the $ 5 million cap on the players' salaries from next season onwards, a move that could see top cricketers earn as much as a whopping $ 15 million (Rs 61 crore approx).

The IPL had put a cap of $ five million (just over Rs 20 crore) for the franchises this year to prevent the very rich team owners from splurging too much.

But with the inaugural edition turning out to be a major success, the players are set to reap the rewards in the next season.

"If we hadn't done that, I can tell you that our players would already be the highest-paid across any sport in the world," IPL chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi was quoted as saying in 'The Daily Telegraph'.

"It will happen - if not today, then tomorrow. Because once the franchises have established themselves, it will be a free-for-all," he added.

  1. IPL is making waves. Never expected this. Specially after seeing the poor response for ICL. We expected this to be just a bit more.

So it is not unexpected, the hike is auctions. But personally I do not see those 'big' names of Cricket fetching as much as they did in this auction. Bidders have learnt a lesson too.

Like Symmonds made no mark. Neither did Brett Lee do wonders.

These kids who are hitting the ball for 6 and running will get more than big names. Lalit Modi has certainly changed the face of cricket.

  2. I am also jealous of their earnings. Not of them. I'd not like to be loved one day; then the next they will burn effigies.

Like the way Lalit Modi id taking IPL to new heights. No wonder he is so strict about the behavior and all. With that sort of money, they better behave.

With all the controversies, never expected the jam packed stadiums we see. Those negative Q are dying down too.

No wonder Hayden has turned 180* and is praising India sky high in Australia.

OK Cricket section, IPL is the place for investments today!

  3. If you see the performance of the players so far in IPL, you will note that some hyped players who are being paid huge amounts are below par in their performance.  I strongly feel that it is ridiculous to pay such huge amounts to the players without any substantial contributions from them.  Instead of increasing the salary, each team should formulate a performance based payment structure for their players, which will make the players more competitive.

  4. too much pay.

  5. No-one is worth that amount of money. It's obcene greed in a country where there are so many needy people.

  6. That is sick.

Why only cricket? So Indians have only one game now?

$ 15 million for 6 weeks of playing? Stop watching cricket.

India is not that rich, millions go aboard every year for better life, or good jobs. And millions don't have enough food to survive. But these cricketer's will get $15 million ( Rs. 61 crore) for only 6 weeks of playing.Shame...Shame.........

  7. What a waste of money. In a world where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, that is the biggest load of c**p ever.

  8. This is crazy!

  9. they don't deserve this much money

after all its because of us that they are so popular ,if we wouldn't have cared they would be nothing just like the hockey team ,our hard earned money is gone and they enjoy it

  10. I think removing the salary cap is ridiculous!

Salary caps help maintain an equal playing field. Without salary caps the rich teams will take all the TOP players leaving the others to fight for the scraps.

I think such a move would be very dangerous, especially when you consider the nature of twenty twenty. From a business and cricketing stand point I don't think $15 million would be viable.

  11. it is simply a wastage of money!

  12. well dude try to bcom a cricketer.

    ull b rich then

  13. I am not jealous of anyone who makes a living even if it is by

playing a sport. Rising the Salary Cap to 3 times is

meaningless. The inflation is not 3 times last year that

necessitates such changes. Such changes for a short period

of time needs critical thinking. I do not see the IPL making

random changes will make them to be a success. By making

such changes no cricketer will deny it, and everyone wants to

participate in it for 6 weeks to make good enough money.

So this forces ICC to set aside time for IPL and yet IPL can

accommodate only 8*8=64 foreign players, of which only

half can only participate in the game. With out expansion of

teams, and having strict guidelines for the money that can be

provided to a contracted player has to be made by IPL.

One needs to have limits and salary caps. I would prefer to

see contracts based on certain performance criteria with a

    base guarantee in the contract.

If one looks at the contracts of Euro Soccer, US NBA, MLB

and NFL these are still peanut deals, but of course these

sports and leagues are well flourished and established.

In that sense I do not see anything wrong by increasing. But

given the proportions of players being paid by boards and

IPL is ridiculously high and hence it has to go in smaller steps

to reach the goal of other sports. For that to happen, IPL needs to be establish itself and then propagate the idea to

other countries to bring wider and broader audience and fan

base. May be it is the first year, one can see this to be a

success. After a while people loose interests unless the

entertaining part is brought in. Most games have been one

sided affairs and the charm will be lost.

I am not a big fan of IPL as it stands now and over time it may

come to a point - not to follow it.

  14. I think they are already making enough money for a sport which is played only in 10 countries. IPL is spoiling players

  15. nice but this is not true.... maximum bid on players will be 5 crors and minimum will be 2.5 thats gonna happen in next session... profit is shrinking for franchees... get the real psitions on http://www.ipl.co.in

  16. i dont think players r worth that much

  17. it makes me embarrased to be an indian but there are things that make me proud to be indian but this is not one of them.....like others said half the country is poor and they are spending money on something else.....it make me very angry too.

on the other hand i laugh because the ECB is tryin to start their own league......i wonder how they are going to top 15 mill :_)
