Players must apply for IPL through board - WICB
West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has made it obligatory for its players to approach IPL through the board and has asked its players to submit expression of interest for next year’s IPL by November 9.
The board has outlined the procedure in a media release today making it binding for all the contracted and non-contracted West Indian players, seeking IPL contracts for next three seasons, to apply for the lucrative Indian Premier
League through the West Indies Cricket Board. In the media release it has been explicitly stated that the players cannot approach the league directly or through agents.
Last month, the chief executive WICB Ernest Hilaire, had opined that the board needs to go through a major restructuring plan in order to deal with the challenges posed by the modern-day game and re-evaluating WICB’s liberal policy of issuing NOCs to the
cricketers to play in overseas competitions was one of those. Hilaire said that the board is not against players trying to maximise their earnings but it should not happen at the cost of their national duties.
Earlier three key players of WICB, Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard, followed by Chris Gayle had turned down the one-year contracts offered by WICB as the contract required themselves available for the national side at all times but the trio – quite successful
in domestic T20 competitions including the IPL - was reluctant to do. The move of trio prompted the WICB management revise its NOC policy.
The board has sought the expression of interest from the players, seeking a place in the IPL4. The expressions must reach WICB by the 9th of this month. After getting the expressions of interest from the cricketers, the
board would make a list of interested players and submit it to the Board of Control of Cricket in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 (BCCI) and the IPL.
According to the media release of WICB, the Indian cricket board and the IPL organizing committee would then register the names into the IPL auction list and send it to the relevant IPL franchises. Each franchise would pick up the
players they would like to be considered for the auction. After this, the Indian board and the league management will inform the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 Cricket Board of all the selected West Indian players and in the last stage the board will convey the news to the players.
The Indian authorities involved in IPL auction would send all contracts to the West Indies board and the board will bear exclusive responsibility for issuing the agreements to its players for their re-evaluation, acceptance or otherwise.
As per rules of IPL, the BCCI or the IPL, cannot communicate directly with players, their managers or agents and will deal only with the respective national boards or associations of the players.
The West Indies Cricket Board has also warned the players that the violation of these guidelines by any player, would lead to the withdrawal of his name from the IPL auction register.
