Players praise the changes at the Quail Hollow Country Club’s 17th hole - Golf News
The Quail Hollow Country Club’s officials have made amendments to the tee box at the 17th hole after a nine-year struggle by the PGA Tour players who continuously requested for the specific change.
According to the new layout, the tee box has been moved around 75 yards to the left, making the players cheerful, as they can now reach the greens easily.
The change has also shortened the length of the hole by 25 yards, bringing it to 192.
The change has been highly appreciated by the players, as it used to create huge problems, even for the big players on the Tour.
Phil Mickelson, one of the leading players in the world of golf, has a record of 14-over par in the eight appearances he has made in the tournament since 2004.
Overall, he has recorded a total of six top-10 finishes, but he has never been able to record a win.
He believes that the 17th hole has always been a hurdle for his wins in the tournament he loves to play each year.
Therefore, he was in the front lane of the players who pushed the tournament officials to make some amendments to the course.
“I think it's a great decision just because of the way the green is designed,” Mickelson said.
“It's designed to receive the shot from over there,” he added. “When the green gets firm like it will be this week it's a much better hole from over there. There is more decision-making and more risk-reward as opposed to 100 per cent defence. I think it's
a great hole from over there”.
Mickelson is now confident to register his first ever victory in the tournament, as he is enjoying great form these days.
In the nine tournaments he has played so far on the PGA Tour, in 2012, he has recorded a victory in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, a second place finish in the Northern Trust Open and tied for third place in the Masters Tournament.
In addition to that, he has also recorded four top-five finishes, reflective of his form in the 2012 season.
