Liverpool defender Jose Enrique pinned the blame of the Reds poor performances on the players and backed his under pressure manager Kenny Dalglish.
Liverpool lost 2-1 against relegation threatened Wigan Athletic at Anfield on Saturday. The defeat was the Reds fifth in their previous six league matches and kept Liverpool at the seventh spot. They now lag behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur by 13 points.
The Reds boss has been feeling the heat lately and was subjected to an intense scrutiny following back to back shock defeats against Queens Park http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rangers-c40314 and Wigan.
However, the Spanish International believed that it was unfair to place all the blame on the Scott. He blamed the player’s inconsistency and mistakes on the Reds slump in the league.
"The manager takes pressure for us and of course that is good," said Enrique in a statement issued to the club’s website.
"But the truth is, when we make mistakes or have a bad game, we know where the mistakes come from.”
Enrique was signed by Liverpool in the summer for a seven million pound fee after the player had completed his five year stint at Newcastle United. Other than Enrique, the Reds also signed Charlie Adam and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Craig-Bellamy-c9471 in summer.
However, the Spaniard was voted by the fans as the best summer signing in October. So far, he has featured in 33 matches for the Reds but he is yet to score a goal for his club. He played a major role in the Anfield side’s 2-0 win against the Gunners at
the Emirates Stadium and was named man of the match after the game. Besides that, he picked up 2 assists in the games against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Everton.
Despite the Reds abject position the league, Enrique still believes that Liverpool have enjoyed a successful current season.
"In the cups we are doing well. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 went many years without winning something and already we have one cup and we are playing for another one," he observed.
Liverpool won the league cup in February, beating Cardiff City in the final and have already booked their place in the semi-final of the FA Cup, where the Reds will face off against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Everton-c39043.
Enrique also thanked his manager for the confidence that he vested in him and hoped that he will be able to live up to the expectations of the Scott.
"I am really grateful to him," he added. "Of course I want to do my best for the team and for Liverpool first, but also for the manager because he signed me."
He admitted that his side needed to improve their league form and believed that the Reds are going through a building process.
