Players to bid at the 2012 US Open Championships: (Part 10) – Tennis Special
Philipp Kohlschreiber – Germany
28-year-old German, Philipp Kohlschreiber, has impressed everyone with his eye-startling performances in the past few months. He is the only German contender in the Top-20 of the ATP World Rankings and bidding to outperform other
superior ranked opponents at the upcoming US Open.
The highly talented German took off the 2012 ATP season as the world number 43 player but forced his way into the Top-20 to clinch his career-high ranking of world number 16 by the end of July. Kohlschreiber has been in a fine
form this season and aims to carry on his sublime run at the last Grand Slam event of the year.
Kohlschreiber has never gone past the third round at the US Open in his career but his improved form and rankings will certainly have a positive impact on his voyage this year. He was ousted by the Czech veteran, Radek Stepanek,
in the very first round of the 2011 US Open Championships in New York but his Grand Slam campaigns have been far successful in the running season. The German number one finished in the fourth round of the Australian Open and ended in the second round of the
Roland Garros French Open.
The German tennis ace had his best Grand Slam run this summer when he beat all the odds to reach the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon Championships. His dream run came to an end after the world number six, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of
France, outclassed him in four sets.
Kohlschreiber is an experienced player and his current form hints of a golden run at the US Open this season. He has four ATP titles in his bag and will certainly like to increase this count to a great deal before leaving the professional
circuit. I would like to see him reaching the fourth round draw comprehensively at the Flushing Meadows.
Kei Nishikori – Japan
No player from Japan has reached this far up in the ATP World Rankings as this 22-year-old youngster has gone. Being the first Japanese player ever to break into the Top-20, Kei Nishikori is anticipated to register some big surprises
in the US Open Championships. He was rated at number 98 at the start of the 2011 ATP season but some stunning victories towards the end of the circuit propelled him closer to the Top-20.
Nishikori has been rated as the ultimate underdog opponent just a year ago but his impressive performances with the racquet this season have torn that tag off him. Nishikori’s best Grand Slam run came at the start of this season
when he reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open after defeating the world number six, Tsonga, in a five-set thriller. He was defeated by Andy Murray and then couldn’t take part in the Roland Garros. However, his Wimbledon campaign lasted until the
third round, falling out at the hands of Juan Martin Del Potro.
The Japanese number one has reached the fourth round of the US Open but it was in 2008. He was exited in the very first round at the Flushing Meadows last year but a lot more is expected from this youngster in this year’s edition.
