Players to bid at the 2012 US Open Championships: (Part Five) – Tennis Special
It has just become a norm that while talking about the hot favourites for winning a Major tournament, only four names, or better say three names are most commonly presented. Eight one member of the ‘Fantastic Four’ group at the
top of the rankings (Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray) is rated to be the hot favourite for every title. Since tennis is a game of surprises, one must keep his eyes opened for any stunning results and upsets against the odds.
The focus of this series of articles is purely on the other under-rated tennis stars that do possess abilities and skills to win the US Open championships besides the Big Four named above. It might seem odd to bid a lower ranked
player to win a Grand Slam title; however, there are some players who have really proved their worth in the professional circuit and have hinted of a hidden champion within themselves. We shall be looking at another hot favourite under-rated super star for
winning the US Open Championships this season and no doubt he deserves to be in my list of these men.
Juan Martin Del Potro – Argentina

The 6ft 6in tall Argentinean tennis ace who shook the entire tennis world by winning the 2009 US Open singles title is eyeing to replicate that glory once again this season. World number nine, Juan Martin Del Potro, has finally
broke back into the Top-10 after a long injury lay-off. The 23-year-old has been constantly fighting with niggling injuries throughout his career and that is the only reason why he hasn’t been able to win any more Grand Slam titles.
Winner of 11 ATP championship titles, Del Potro made his valiant comeback to the 2011 season as the world number258. He was sidelined from the professional circuit due to a career-threatening wrist injury but he has forced his
way through the last one year to gain his rightful spot in the Top-10. The Argentinean number one has already won two ATP titles this season and is in an excellent form to unleash his true colours at the season’s last Grand Slam event in New York.
It just seems yesterday that a 20-year-old young boy toppled the then world number one and the greatest player in the history of the sport, Roger Federer, in the final of 2009 US Open Championships. Del Potro broke into the lime
light when he brutally manhandled the then world number three, Rafael Nadal, in triplet-sets, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2, in the semi-final of the Grand Slam event at Flushing Meadows. He went on with his belligerence to hunt down Federer in the title match to lift his
maiden Grand Slam title.
Del Potro has never been in his prime after that Major triumph he had in 2009. He constantly been troubled by his shoulder and wrist in the past few years but it seems like he has gained some of his vintage form this season. The
Argentine loves to play at the Flushing Meadows and it is about time that he steps forward to get his hands on the glorious trophy once again. I bid Del Potro to must reach the quarter-final stages, or even further if he sustains his winning impetus.
