Players to bid at the 2012 US Open Championships: (Part Three) – Tennis Special
Hard courts of the glorious Flushing Meadows Arena will stage this year’s fourth Major tournament in the last week of August and tennis titans from all corners of the world will descend on New York to get their hands on gold. Our
review of looking at the players bidding for the season’s last Grand Slam event, the US Open Championships continues and we shall gaze another talented player in this episode.
Tomas Berdych – Czech Republic
Czech number one, Tomas Berdych, is a regular member of the elite Top-10 at the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Rankings list for the last two years. A momentary slump in his form pushed him almost out of the Top-10
towards the end of the 2011 season but he has managed well to regain his favourite world number seven spot this year.
Berdych is among the long list of other players whose performance and class are overshadowed by the brilliance of the ‘Fantastic Four’ (Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray). No doubt the 26-year-old Czech
veteran is one of the finest tennis players his country has ever produced but he is also among that huge number of players still suffering the agony of not winning a Grand Slam title. Berdych was the quarter-finalist at the Australian Open for successive years,
2011 and 2012, and featured the semi-final of the Roland Garros in the year 2010.
The Czech tennis ace got his golden opportunity in the same year when he beat all the odds to reach the final of the Wimbledon Championships. He outplayed the liked of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic en route to the title match
but fell victim to the belligerence of Rafael Nadal to sustain his title drought at the Grand Slams.
Berdych’s best run at the US Open Championships has lasted till the fourth round. He has reached the pre-quarter-final round on three occurrences but couldn’t go further on any occasion. Surely he desires to post a much better
performance at this year’s US Open and he is in a decent form to stun any top class player. The Czech veteran was the quarter-finalist at the Australian Open at the start of this season, falling to Nadal once again.
His voyage at the Roland Garros French Open was halted by the former US Open champion, Juan Martin Del Potro, in the fourth round this summer. However, in the only grass court Grand Slam event of the season, the Wimbledon Championships,
Berdych suffered huge humiliation after getting defeated at the hands of the then world number 87, Ernests Gulbis, in the very first round of the tournament. It was something that Czech will wish to forget as soon as possible and focus on post a real solid
performance in his US Open campaign.
Berdych is a strong player on hard courts, as three of his total seven ATP titles came on this playing surface. He could barely reach the third round last year at the US Open but he is expected to reach at least the quarter-final
stages of the mega event this year.
