Players to bid for at the 2012 US Open Championships: (Part One) – Tennis Special
With the season’s last Grand Slam event approaching fast, all players are eying to catch some glory towards the end of the professional circuit. The hype of the US Open Championships engulf all the tennis professionals because
a glorious run at this mega event can earn a player sufficient points to book a spot at the season-ending grand finale, the ATP World Tour Finals in London.
So, the US Open is quite well kinked to the Tour Finals at the coveted O2 arena and it boosts up the urge of winning among the contenders. Now it is just a norm to predict that the world’s top four players, Roger Federer, Novak
Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray will be seen in the semi-final round, as it normally happens in most of the Grand Slam events. However, we better look at the other players beside these four titans to see their prospects of registering some major upsets
at the Flushing Meadow, New York. In this series, we will look at the players aiming to produce some positive results in the US Open campaign, other than the most likely Top-Four players.
David Ferrer – Spain
Holding to the fifth spot in the ATP World Rankings for quite some time now, the Spanish number two, David Ferrer, is one of the hot favourite players in every tournament. His presence in the draw might be overshadowed by those
Top-Four giants but his performances are never to be ignored. The 30-year-old veteran is one of the finest tennis players Spain has ever produced and holds among the favourites to reach at least the quarter-final stage of the US Open this season.
Technically the second best clay court player, Ferrer has to tendency to adopt his game play according to the different playing surfaces. He has won 16 ATP championship titles so far and nine of them came on his favourite red dirt.
He bagged two on grass courts and five titles on the hard courts. So the trend shows that the second favourite surface for Ferrer is the hard court and he might pose some serious threats to the players ranked above him in the tournament draw.
Ferrer’s last year’s run at the US Open was not that convincing as it was anticipated from him. He was off to a solid star in the Grand Slam voyage, beating the likes of Igor Andreev, James Blake and Florian Mayer in the initial
rounds to find some impetus. However, the Spaniard didn’t fire against the experience of the former world number one, Andy Roddick, in the fourth round and fell to him at 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 3-6.
Albeit Ferrer has gone one year older this season, it is expected that he is in his finest of form to play the US Open Championships. He has already bagged five championship titles this year and appears 100 per cent physically
fit to take on the challenge of any one at the hard courts of Flushing Meadows. I would rather say that Ferrer will surely be the semi-finalist at this year’s edition of the US Open.
