Players to watch out for in the English Premier League this season
The new Premier League season will see some of the old and some new faces trying to make their mark. There are some usual suspects who are once again tipped as the ones to make the most impact this season. Here is a look at the top 5 players expected to make a difference in the 2010-11 English Premier League season.
1) Wayne Rooney, Manchester United
The first and foremost player would have to be Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney. The England striker had a disappointing World Cup campaign and is looking eager to prove his worth yet again with his club. Last season, he scored 34 goals for his club and pretty much carried the team on his own two shoulders. An injury at the tail end of the season did cost him and the team heavily. Ever since Cristiano Ronaldo left United for Real Madrid, Rooney was expected to step up his game and he most certainly did. Manchester United, though, did not manage to win the league, and it would be added motivation for Rooney to once again give it his all and bring the title back to Old Trafford.
2) Joe Cole, Liverpool
Joe Cole, who has been one of the best English midfielders for a while, has embarked on a new journey with Liverpool. He has nothing to prove as he had 6 successful seasons with Chelsea where he won 3 Premier League titles and 5 cup competitions. The winger left Chelsea because he was not favoured in the first team on most occasions. Cole would have the incentive to prove his worth at Anfield and show his former employers that he deserves a regular place in the starting 11.
3) Yossi Benayoun, Chelsea
Just like Joe Cole made the switch from Chelsea to Liverpool, Israel midfielder Yossi Benayoun has made the journey the other way. Benayoun spent 3 years at Liverpool after arriving in England with West Ham United. The right winger is blessed with immense talent and possesses quick feet and the ability to dribble his way through defences. He left Liverpool citing reasons that he wanted to win some silverware for which he thought Chelsea was a perfect choice. The Blues signed him for 5 million pounds.
4) Aaron Lennon, Tottenham Hotspur
Aaron Lennon is another midfielder in England that has long been called the next best thing. Even though Lennon has been doing well for Tottenham Hotspur and also for England, he is yet to reach his true potential. He has all the tricks in the bag needed for a winger, and has lightning pace. Still, it’s the final ball in the box that has not been there. Experts still believe that he is the man to make the right wing for England his own, and his manager at Tottenham has also said that Lennon has a lot more to offer in the upcoming season.
5) Marouane Chamakh, Arsenal
Chamakh is probably Arsenal’s most exciting signing in recent times. The Morocco man signed for Arsenal on a free transfer from French club Bordeaux. Arsene Wenger had been scouting him for a while and as soon he found an apt opportunity, Wenger made his move.
He scored 14 goals in the French league, helping the team win the French title back in 2008-09. He is believed to be the perfect link-up man to play alongside Andrey Arshavin and Cesc Fabregas in the midfield.
