  1. You'd probably get the best solo sound by having the chorus after the distortion, with the amp on a clean channel. So yeah, I guess that fits.

In general, stick to around 50% gain on the DS-1 or less. Keep your amp channel clean or only slightly gainy, if that helps get closer to the tone. Personally I try to keep my modulation effects (chorus, flanger, etc) on the subtle side, but with a smaller speaker maybe cranking it up a bit is warranted. Try less chorus first.

Keep your pickup position in mind.... if your pickups are closer to the strings they have a little more output and are a little more aggressive and raw sounding. Back them away from the strings to be a little smoother and less hot. Lowering the bass side of the pickup is a great trick, because when you use gain it's the bass frequencies that saturate first. What that means is that lowering your bass frequencies will take away a bit of crunch, but it increases clarity, especially in your treble. It lowers mud, fartiness, and can help with feedback, too.

And... you are playing the solo in the right octave, right? Cuz I think it's supposed to be played pretty low on the fretboard....

  2. Cobain's set up consisted of plugging left handed Fender Jaguars and Mustangs with humbuckers installed at an angle to the bridge into a Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion and an Electro-Harmonix Poly-Flange, Poly-Chrous or Small Clone he used a Big Muff pedal for distortion. His amplification consisted of a Mesa Boogie Studio or a quad preamp set clean wired into a Crest 4801 power amplifer and a number of 4 x 12 speakers

  3. Kurt Cobain used heavy jazz strings and raw, low end tone on his distortion (he also had a Boss DS-2 distortion pedal with a seperate footswitch for more overdrive.)  the reason the solo sounds pitchy is because it's done on individual strings and not chords.  You don't really need the chorus effect for it, but you can always switch it up.  you just need to play with the k***s till it sounds right. He also used a Flanger pedal for "come as you are"

  4. Have the chorus pretty high on your amp

DS-1 Have the Tone at 1 Distortion Maxed and Level Maxed

Use the neck pick up for the solo
