  1. I have been playing for years, self taught. However, with hindsight, I would have had a few lessons to pick up the basics as I would have been where I am now a lot quicker. However, don't become reliant on lessons. Some teachers will string you out (no pun intended!) for years learning c**p rock songs etc.

Get the basics off and then go off and experiment yourself.

  2. well taking lessons are definitely a faster way to learn, but theres a whole lot of tutorials on the net these days(youtube),maybe ya could go get a how to play guitar instructional books...its really cheap and easy to follow, but it'll be better if ya had someone who can already play, just to get some basic tips and all...cheers...

  3. Getting a teacher can really help you learn faster and gives you a knowledgeable source for all your questions. If that's not for you then there are a lot of free lessons on the internet. Also take any chance you have to go to open jam sessions and play with other musicians. You will learn a lot form this and people will be able to answer questions for you. Last but not least, buy an electronic tuner like the IntelliTouch.

  4. Have a few lessons to become acquainted with your instrument.  Get a good chord book.  Find a mentor or slightly better player than yourself to jam with.  Get a fake book of your favorite songs.  Rock & Roll!

  5. Ive never gotten a single guitar lesson, but I must say I am pretty good, not trying to sound snotty or anything.

I would say get about a month or twoo's worth of lessons so you can get used to the guitar and learn how it works.

Then you can experiment and do your own thing.

This way you can play whatever you want, without being under the stress of playing only what your teacher wants.

Playing the guitar is supposed to be about having fun... so go ahead, and have fun!
