Playoff expansion has issues, say MLB experts - MLB News
Since Major League authorities have somewhat approved two one-game playoffs for coming season, many baseball experts are raising the issue of certain complications which will eventually wrap-up the true competiveness of the game.
Bud Selig was the first Major League representative who appeared in the media and told reporters that the league is approaching a mutual understanding on signing a new rule for the next playoffs.
“I really believe we’ll have the (extra) wild card for this year,” Selig said Friday at SoxFest. “Clubs really want it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an issue that the clubs want more than to have the extra wild card.”
He added, “We’re working on dates right now, it looks to me like we’ll have it, because I’ve told everybody we have to have it. It will be exciting. A one-game playoff and it will start the playoffs off in a very exciting manner.”
One source said this week, "I really don't know if this is going to get done."
According to MLB inside sources, the league is expecting an extra round that will give three wild card entries to top division teams. Last year, the St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays made it through via wild card but with this new regulation, a total of three teams will be qualifying for the postseason competition this fall.
However, baseball commissioner, Bud Selig is still placing a huge significance to the matter for potential approval by the majority. Every MLB owner will be voting in the next few weeks to implement this new suggestion that is only brought forward giving a rather fair chance to another top team to participate in the playoffs.
Meanwhile, Wednesday was the last scheduled date to file an official request for expanding the playoffs’ entries but now reports suggest that coming week will be important regarding filing for a potential vote casting call.
For many this is still not safe to articulate that adding up two wild-cards for next season is pretty specific. First the Major League will have to change the entire schedule of the 2012 regular season and later they also need to change the respective timings of the World Series and Division Championships.
