Playroom storage labeling.....?

My kids playroom and the garage is driving me nuts. I have some extra time to fix it (older 2 are going off to spend the week at my sisters) so I'm going to take advantage. I went to Ikea today to find things for the playroom and bought a ton of storage supplies. I think the area is coming along, but I want to be able to have the kids clean-up without me helping. I have 2 who can't read yet. Thanks in advance for your help.

  1. Label with pictures and words. Get out old catalog's and cut out the picture of the toys and boldly print the name of the toy. Tape onto the bin and presto. That way your children can associate the picture with the word. This is a great way to help build those early literary skills.

  2. Great idea for the pictures- you can also do an image search on yahoo or google.  Or even use clipart pictures.  Put the words under it though too so the kids can learn to read it as they get older.

  3. I have a 2 year old and a 1 year old. What I did was go to websites like Target, Toys R Us, etc. and did my best to find the EXACT picture of the toys I had (like the Melissa and Doug shape train, and crayola crayons) and copied those pictures into a publisher document. Then I wrote out what each one was under the picture and Presto! I had my labels. I actually printed them off on regular paper, cut them out and bought transparent paper sleeves, which I put the labels in and taped unto the storage containers. I tried it once without the transparent sleeves and my 1 year old had every label off within a month, the sleeves add toddler-proof protection! Oh, and both my 1 and 2 year old are able to figure out what goes where, I was amazed how easily they were able to clean up after themselves after I did this!

  4. donate most of the stuff, so that you can minimize and get down to essentials and quit buying new stuff.
