40 GB, 60 GB and 80 GB versions, what are the benefits of the 80 GB over the 60 GB/40 GB versions, is storage that important? Am thinking of getting the 40GB version since the 60GB is not sold in shops, thanks

  1. Here is my view...

i have installed a 250GB HD in my PS3... i use the Playstation as a media server, it has all my music (30GB worth) pictures... demos and media from Playstation Network...

I also have Movies and TV Shows as media files, music videos, pod casts.

I also got the large hard drive because of "PlayTV" it's a add on for the PS3 coming this year... you can record TV Shows and Movies right to the PS3.... so it's now a DVR as well.

If you use the PS3 JUST for gaming... go the 40GB, but i use it to it full potential.

  2. You can save more data on a larger hard drive

The 60GB and 80GB are virtually identical except for one minute detail (besides hard drive), playing ps2 games, the 60GB plays around 99 percent of ps2 games, the 80GB only plays 85 percent of ps2 games, it gets pretty complicated so I'll leave the reason why out.

The 60GB and 80GB both have chrome trim, media card readers(SD, Memory stick, and compact flash), 4 usb ports and can play ps2 games, they both use more power than the 40GB, the reason is a little complicated

The 40GB, has silver(not shiny) trim, no media card readers, only 2 usb ports and does NOT play ps2 games, and consumes less power than 60 or 80GB models.

The 80GB is nicer in almost every way plus it comes with a game and a nicer controller, I suggest this model.

But a new model is coming out this September which is better and the same price as the 40GB but things only get more complicated.

Email me if you have any questions, you can get there from my profile page.

  3. Benefits? I see none. Unless you plan on buying literally hundreds of games, and will download alot from the internet, I'd definetly stay with the 40GB. It's cheaper!

  4. Note however that the 40gb version does not have backwards compatibility with PS2 games if you were interested in playing any of those on it.  Another nice feature about the 80 is the idea of using it as a media center with your home theater.

  5. Well...for me, go for the 80GB. Some games require installations into your hard drive, eg. Devil May Cry 4 takes 4 GB space. You need it. Or, go for the 40GB and replace the drive w/ a bigger capacity.
