Either click the name of someone in your Messenger List or type the first few letters of someone’s ID in the Find Contacts box, then click the name you want from the list that appears below the box.

Now just type a message at the bottom of the conversation window, and click Send or press Enter on your keyboard.

Here is how you can do that:

Got a new friend? To send an IM to someone that you have not added to your Messenger List:

Click the Actions menu in Yahoo! Messenger and select "Send an Instant Message."

Double-click the ID of the person you wish to send a message to.

Type your message.

Note: If you enter a username that does not exist, you will receive the following error message: "The message for user 'username' was not saved. Please verify the recipient's name and try again. Thank you."

To send an IM to a contact that you have added to your Messenger List:

Double-click the contact name.

Type your message.

Note: You can send an IM to a person who is offline. The next time the person comes online, your message will pop up automatically.
