How would you do this word problem? Please show work:

William has pennies, nickels, and dimes. The number of nickels is 3 less than the number of dimes, and the number of pennies is 4 times the number of dimes. The total value of the coins is $3.65 (365 cents). How many of each coin does he have??

This is as much as i no:

dimes; = x

nickels; = x - 3

pennies; = 4x

  1. well since dimes are 10 cents and nickels are 5 cents and pennies worth 1 cent, I would do this:

    10x +5(x-3) +4x =365;

    19x -15 =365

    19x=380

    x=20
