Baseball Legend

When I was nine years old,

I stood before a man of pride.

And I could see his smile clear

And knew that he was satisfied.

As I saw his uniform

I knew the legend right away.

The great Babe Ruth was standing there

I knew not what to say.

He shook my hand and told me

“Kid, someday you’ll be a star.”

He gave a smile and walked away,

Just smoking his cigar.

I told my mom who I had seen,

She could not help but scoff.

“That’s not Babe Ruth, it’s just a man,

Who’s just a little…off.”

  1. Twenty years ago, in the first game of the 1988 World Series, a battered and bruised Kirk Gibson came to the plate. He, more than anyone else, was responsible for bringing the Dodgers this far. But his body had paid the price. Well, he hit one over the fence and literally hobbled around the bases. The Dodgers went on to win, and many give Mr. Gibson the credit for inspiring his team to be able to do so.

Around this time there was a movie in the theaters called "The  Natural," based on a novel by Bernard Malamud. Robert Redford played the title role. In this movie, events occurred which were strikingly similar.

That night, on most all TV stations, one could see clips from the movie interspersed with the tapes of the day's game. One home run was hit by a real person. It really happened. The other happened only in the mind of the author. It DID NOT happen. And yet, both events were equally true.

If you should see the Babe again, Tell him Lefty Lourie says hello.

  2. Well if the uniform had little stripes and the man was a little over weight - that was probably the Babe.

I know you are not old enough to really have seen him - in the flesh.  But I do believe in angels ♥

  3. Funny - nice one!

  4. Legends never die, just ask Elvis!  A cute poem, well constructed as I read.

  5. Why do adults do that to kids, especially their own?

It's a great poem and I'm glad you met the Babe!
